Teen Titans Go! To the Movies Review
So yeah, people apparently wanted this.
I don't think I know a single person over 10 years old who actually likes Teen Titans Go! I certainly don't. I'll give it props that it's at least original, but it's just SOOOOOO obnoxious and also maybe not the best choice for kids. In case you're wondering, the movie is about the same as the show; except it's better.
It did make me laugh a good bit. Whenever the film goes for more bizarre and meta jokes is when it excels the most. There are some funny critiques of the superhero film industry here and there that really work to make the film better. Also, I love the fact that this film not only made fun of DC, but also Marvel. I kid you not, there was a Stan Lee cameo. The first ever in a DC movie. A cartoon version of the man makes a "subtle" cameo. There were some other moments that really stood out to me particular. Like a trippy, upbeat, 80s style musical number featuring Michael Bolton that happens out of nowhere. Easily my favorite part of the film, however, is an elaborate Back to the Future parody scene where the titans decide to stop all superhero origins after they heard the only way they could get a movie was if there were no other superheroes. Basically, they stop Krypton from exploding, steal the lasso of truth, get Aquaman stuck in some six pack rings, and send the Waynes down a different alley. They go back to future only to find the world in an apocalypse run by villains. Naturally, they go back and undo all of their actions, rending the whole series of events utterly pointless. Genius right there.
The main problem I found with this film was that I found the plot to be boring. Think of it this way: it is literally the exact same plot of Incredibles 2 where Robin is trying to get himself a movie. That's it. I'm not joking; the twist is exactly the same as Incredibles 2. Part of what made the similarly toned Lego Batman Movie is that it had all of the bizarre and self-aware humor that this film had, but it also had an engaging and original plot. I'm not claiming that Teen Titans copied Incredibles 2, but I will say the latter film is more worth your time, as it's much funnier and it has a better executed plot. This film, however, wasn't quite funny enough to carry its plot flaws. It still was funnier then some of the other animated films that came out this year like Hotel Transylvania 3 and (GAG) Early Man.
I found the voice cast of the Titans to be annoying, just like the show (not the original show, the new one). However, the supporting cast was pretty good across the board, with the exception of James Corden. I don't really have too much else to say, except for one request to Hollywood: Stop putting James Corden in these movies! He's not funny! He wasn't funny in this, or Peter Rabbit (I actually liked that movie), Emoji Movie (I actually hated that movie), or anything else (that's not true, he had one of the funniest characters in Ocean's 8, which I will try to review soon.). That's it, I'm done.
SCORE: 6/10
It's not nearly as good as the critics say it is (91%? Are you kidding me?), but it was nevertheless entertaining. I still recommend Lego Batman and Incredibles 2 over this for those looking for animated superhero comedies, but Teen Titans Go! To the Movies ain't bad.
