Ocean's 8 Review

Ocean's 8 Movie Poster

I'm gonna be honest, I've never seen an Ocean's movie prior to 8, so fans of those movies should maybe take what I say with a grain of salt. This is an opinion from someone who hasn't seen any of them, so in a way, it's unbiased.

Ocean's 8 is no masterpiece, but it is a very fun movie to watch. It ingeniously mixes comedy with slick heist thrills to keeps you guessing and laughing at almost every turn. Almost all the pieces fit together in this film with its great cast, tightly wound plot, and witty script. It doesn't really have me clamoring for more, but it's a nice one-off film.

Like I said, the cast is amazing. All 8 of the main actresses were given material well suited to their characters and deliver hilarious and believable performances as criminals. The performance that particularly surprised me was Mindy Kalig's, because is shows that she is capable of being funny and having a good performance in SOMETHING. I thought it would never happen, but she finally delivered a performance that I didn't find annoying. A supporting actor who I tend to find even more annoying than Kalig might've actually been the funniest character in the film: James Corden, who is easily my least favorite late-night host (Jimmy Fallon remains to be the best). Despite giving some insufferable and annoying performances in a bunch of animated films, the Brit was actually funny in Ocean's 8! Another pleasant surprise! Finally, I also wanted praise Awkwafina's scene-stealing performance as a complete and utter goofball who happens to con people on the streets. She seems to have made some breakout performances this year, so you'll probably see more of  her in the future.

Also, the plot is brilliant..... for the most. For one thing, this film nails its bait-and-switch moments. There are twists throughout that leave you pleasantly surprised and entertained through its runtime. The infusion of comedy makes it work even more. In fact, without that tone, I don't film would be as good. This brings me to my biggest issue: whenever the tone changes, the film tends to come to a grinding halt. Of course, the film isn't always funny since it is a heist movie. However, some of the scenes that aren't humorous are just plain boring and could've been executed better. This wouldn't be so much of an issue for me if the film wasn't almost 2 hours! There's a good bit of runtime that could've been tweaked a little to make the scenes less dull and at the very least, interesting. That's really my only big issue. I thought the plot was very well written overall, with the exception of the resolution, which I can't say without spoiling the film. I recommend you check it out and see for yourself, because I think you'll probably have fun watching it too.

SCORE: 7.5/10

Despite some pacing issues, the majority of film is very funny and entertaining to the point it forms a satisfying heist comedy.
